Copper Coast
Scrambling over and, a couple times, under some slick, wet rocks, I eventually came to this small patch of beach along the Copper Coast of Ireland. Although partially protected by rock outcroppings, the tide rose rapidly and required a near vertical hike up the grass covered cliffs. The drama and beauty of the spot was well worth it, though.
The first geopark designated in Ireland, the Copper Coast stretches 25km along the southern coast of the country. It is an area rich in cultural heritage, with Neolithic dolmens, Iron Age forts, pre-Christian inscribed stones and the remains of many medieval churches. The coast is named for the historic metal mining industry which once dominated the area.
